Recipe – Hobo Dinner

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 pkt onion soup mix
  • Montreal steak seasoning
  • Cooking spray
  • Cabbage leaves
  • 2-4 Potatoes, sliced (optionally can used frozen sliced or shredded potatoes)
  • 4 Carrots, sliced
  • 1 can Corn
  • 1 can Green beens
  • 1 Onion, sliced
  • 4 Tbspn butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste


  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) or prepare grill/campfire.
  2. Mix soup mix and ground beef and form into 4 ground beef patties.
  3. In a large (15 inch square or larger) piece of aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, place cabbage leaves in the center of the foil square, then place a ring of onion and the hamburger patty on top of the onion.
  4. Sprinkle steak seasoning on top of patties.
  5. Layer the vegetables on top of the patties, starting with the potatoes, then carrots and then canned veggies.
  6. Season veggies with salt and pepper and top with a tablespoon of butter or 2 pats of butter.
  7. Please a piece of foil over the top and seal the tin foil on all four sides with several folds.
  8. Bake in preheated oven for about 30 minutes or place over the fire or grill for 15-30 minutes.
  9. If your edges are sealed well you may want to flip the packet half way through cooking.
  10. Open one of the packets and cut into hamburger to check and ensure the patty is cooked thoroughly.
