Recipe – Pizza Hut Retro Taco Pizza

Many moons ago, when I was in high school I worked at Pizza hut and loved their taco pizza. They don’t make it anymore, but I recently craved it and needed to recreate it!

Pizza Hut Retro Taco Pizza

Origin:  Pizza Hut & My Kitchen
Total Preparation Time: 15 to 30 minutes
Actual Cooking Time: Less than 15 minutes
Number of Servings: 4

  • 1 pkg Taco seasoning mix
  • 1 Head lettuce, shredded
  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 Tomatoes, diced
  • 1 Small onions, diced
  • 1-2 cups Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 14 Inches pizza dough
  • 1 Tbsp bacon grease, lard or butter (bacon grease is the best for flavor)
  • 16 ounces Refried beans
  • 1 Tbsp cumin**
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

1. Prepare pizza dough and press out on a pizza pan.
2. Brown 1 lb of ground beef with one package of taco seasoning mix. Don’t add water. Drain ground beef and set aside to cool.
3. Melt down bacon grease, add the refried beans, cumin, salt and garlic powder.Warm and add water as needed to make the beans spreadable like a sauce.
4. Spread the beans on the pizza dough evenly. Top with the ground beef. Sprinkle about 1/3 of the cheese over beef and beans.
5. Bake at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes or until dough is golden and the toppings are hot.
6. Immediately cut the pizza into slices, leaving the slices in the pan.
7. Spread the lettuce over the top, sprinkle with tomatoes, onions, and the rest of the cheese.

Cook’s Notes
I only actually put taco meat on half of the pizza. I prefer it meatless. You can top this pizza with sour cream and salsa.

**A commenter mentioned this might be too much cumin.  I like it with this much but you may want to try less.

If you really like Pizza Huts recipe change the TBSP TO TSP on the Cumin or may be even a little less. I tried this and will start with a 1/4 TBSP first next time and go from there. The rest I think is perfect !!

Thanks for trying the recipe. I do like it with more cumin but I will add a note for others in case they are in the same boat as you. 🙂

There are only a few treats that we get when we visit our old stomping grounds in Monmouth, IL and that is Pizza Hut Taco Pizza. I so think it would be a hit here in Fuquay Varina. NC I know for sure of at least 50 people who would be regular customers AND THAT’S ONLY ME! I hope you can pease a 70-year-old and introduce it in Fuquay! I’ll wait anxiously for the Taco pizza. This is on my bucket list ! I was near death 2 times in the last year – I guess the good Lord spared me because I want a pizza Hut taco pizza now!!! Is there a franchise in Cary, NC or Raleigh? Thank you for listening and please don’t wait too long! I’m not getting any younger. Marilyn Undercoffer in Fuquay Varina, NC 02756

    You forgot the Doritos.

    • Jenifer said,

      July 10, 2015 at 2:43 am

I don’t think they had Doritos on it where I worked. Godfather’s pizza had Doritos but not the Pizza Hut version. It would be a good add regardless though.

I agree, no Doritoes when they made them at the Pizza Hut in Urbana, OH. A basket of plain corn chips and Salsa prior to the finished pizza. Now must change my shirt, wet with drool, lol!

Made this today for lunch! I too worked at Pizza Hut and lived their taco pizza. Was excited to see this recipe to try. I cut the cumin in half and it was perfect!

You can buy bean dip that is for chips and use it instead of refried beans. You dont have to do anything to it just spread it out. We used to do this at Pizza hut for out break pizzas when we couldnt get the ingredients anymore.

    • Jenifer said,

      January 1, 2018 at 6:44 am

I think bean dip would work really well. Thanks for the tip!

We used to LOVE the taco pizza but for some reason they stopped serving it in the Wisconsin restaurants. I freaked out when in the mid 90’s, while in Branson, MO, we stopped at Pizza Hut & saw they still had taco pizza on their menu! I don’t know why they only offer it in certain locations. I really wish they would bring it back here in Wisconsin!!

    • Jessie said,

They have it in Wisconsin. I live just South of Madison and all the Pizza Huts have it.

Not sure what part of WI you live in but they still have it in my hometown of Beloit, WI. Just wish they had it in KY where I live now. LOL

I also worked at Pizza Hut and loved this pie but the discontinued it when my store was sold to corporate and was no longer franchised and so many changes that I quit after making it to a shift manager and it just wasn’t the same. I am hoping this recipe tastes just like the original and to make that possible I would make only ONE change is that we did NOT use the taco seasoning in the hamburger, we just used the beef right out of the bin. I am going to make it BOTH ways and see which one tastes more authentic. I will post my results after I try it both ways.

    • Jenifer said,

      February 19, 2018 at 3:32 pm

You are right, Dan. I prefer the seasoned beef but in order to be closer to the original it would be plain ground beef. I hope you enjoy it either way!

    • Stephanie W. said,

      September 8, 2018 at 9:52 pm

Dan, I plan on making this tomorrow for dinner. I am CRAVING it and my Pizza Hut stopped selling it in the late 80s. I do not use taco seasoning when making tacos and I do not remember the Pizza Hut taco pizza having it in their beef, but let me know which way you liked it better.

Oh, I’m like you…I love the cumin flavor and yes, the bacon grease will add extra flavor to retried beans.

I worked at at Pizza Hut in Bellevue NE when taco pizza was rolled out. Pain to make because there was no room on the prep table for all the ingredients. I was there for the intro of pan pizza too
