Recipe: Homemade Chili Beans

A recipe to make your own chili beans.  Delicious and cheaper!

Total Preparation Time: 30 minutes
Actual Cooking Time: 4-6 hours
Number of Servings: 16 or more


  • 4 cups dry pinto beans
  • water
  • 1 whole ham hock
  • 1 whole onion, minced
  • 2 whole red bell peppers, minced
  • 4 cloves Garlic, Minced
  • 1 whole jalapenos, minced
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt, more to taste
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons black pepper, more to taste


  1. Sort beans and remove and bad beans (shriveled or deformed) and any rocks.
  2. Put beans in crock pot and cover with water plus about 2-3 inches more of water.
  3. Let soak overnight
  4. In the morning, drain the beans and rinse.
  5. Add beans and all ingredients listed.
  6. Cover with water plus 2 inches more of water.
  7. Cook on low 4-6 hours (time may vary depending on how quickly your crockpot heats) stirring occasionally.
  8. Once beans are tender and in a rich chili sauce they are done.  Allow to cool and store in freezer containers or bags.  A cup and a half of beans is roughly equivalent to a can of chili beans purchased at your local grocery store.
